"When the sun goes down,
and the band won't play,
I'll always remember us this way."
Since its trailer dropped in June, A Star Is Born has been fueling serious buzz in the entertainment community. Not only is Bradley Cooper making his debut as a director, but singing while doing it. He also enlists the help of Lady Gaga- musical powerhouse but acting newcomer.
Though I think it goes without saying, this film deserves each and every accolade it's given.
Cooper's actions in front of and behind the camera are inspiring. His depiction of a man worn by his past and his addictions is heart-wrenching and raw. His dedication to vocal and instrumental success are not only heard but felt. His love for the project and Gaga's Ally is felt after every approving smile or look he gives. His way of storytelling goes beyond the theater and follows viewers all the way home. It stays with them and leaves them reeling.
Gaga's performance is refreshing and vibrant. From her first moment on screen to her final look at the camera, she is Ally. For over two hours, one of the most iconic and recognizable celebrities of my generation has succeeded in making millions believe she was a different person- hardly recognizable. Just as Jackson Maine stops in his tracks while listening to her rendition of "La Vie en Rose," we too sit in awe. Performance after performance, scene after scene, we are caught smitten by her personality and voice.
Though it isn't a musical, the music and story go hand in hand. No sound is an accident. Every song has a purpose. I firmly believe this is one of the reasons so many people are falling in love with the soundtrack. Throughout the movie, the characters discuss the importance of performing songs with meaning, that speak the truth. Even when there is only music playing in the background, the song adds to the story, building towards the greater purpose of the film.
This is not just a movie about romance or fame. It is greater than that. This movie is about the power of addiction. Fame is fleeting, but in the end you're stuck with yourself, your love and your demons. You have to be ready to fight and greater than that: be ready to deal with the consequences of falling short. If you aren't, there's no telling the damage you can cause.
This film isn't just something you should go watch. This film is an journey you have to see and experience for yourself. It fills you. It breaks you. It makes you feel deep into your heart.
